How to Wear a Camel Coat: 5 Easy Outfits for Men and Women

If you buy one coat, make it camel. It goes with navy, grey, cream, brown and black, it works with jeans and with tailoring, and it lights up a grey winter day. Here is how to wear it.

What colours go with camel?

Camel loves cream and white (soft and light), navy (the classic contrast), grey and charcoal (calm, city), and brown (warm, tone on tone). Black works too, but keep it to one piece, such as boots or a roll-neck.

Single or double-breasted?

A double-breasted coat looks more formal and a little warmer; a single-breasted one is easier over a hoodie or a chunky knit. For men, the 70% wool double-faced double-breasted coat is the classic. For women, the belted double-breasted trench in camel is the lighter option, and the double-breasted coat with teddy collar the warmest.

5 easy outfits

1. Camel + navy (men)

Navy knit, grey or cream trousers, brown suede shoes. A navy cable quarter-zip under the coat is all it takes.

2. Camel + cream (men)

Cream roll-neck, grey trousers, dark brown shoes: our Camel Coat look puts it together for you.

3. Camel + white (women)

White knit, light jeans or white wide-leg trousers, beige boots. Fresh and light, even in January.

4. Camel + brown (women)

Tone on tone: a brown knit, the tan leather tote and brown boots. Rich, warm, easy.

5. Camel + black (both)

Black roll-neck and black Chelsea boots, everything else in grey or cream. The black makes the camel look sharper.

Fit and length

Choose your usual size if you wear a fine knit underneath, one size up if you like a thick jumper. A coat that ends at or below the knee looks the most elegant. Every coat page has a size guide and a "Find my size" tool that picks the size for you in 10 seconds.
